 Derby Course by Division

Derby Division
Follow buoys 1-2-3-4-2-1
When paddling from buoy 3 to 4 go between the islands. Finish between Buoy 1 and the west shoreline.

Racing, Race Solo and Race Kayak Divisions
Follow buoys 1-2-3-4-3-2-1
When paddling from buoy 3 to 4 (or reverse) go between the islands. Finish between Buoy 1 and the west shoreline.

Race SUP Division
Follow buoys 1-2-3-2-1
When paddling back from buoy 3 to 2 go between the islands. Finish between Buoy 1 and the west shoreline.

Recreational Division: Canoe, Kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard 

Follow buoys 1-2-5-2-1
Paddle counter-clockwise around the island (5). Finish between Buoy 1 and the west shoreline.

 

Finish Line
It is important that all boats finish between the orange finish buoy ("1" on the map) and the western shoreline (stay to the right of the finish buoy). This is the only way we can record a time for you. Boats heading straight to the beach and bypassing the finish line will be disqualified (sorry!).

Paddle Derby Divisions

DERBY: 6 miles; 17’ to 18 1/2’ canoes, excluding USCA Cruisers and pro boats. Men, women, mixed.

RACING: 7 miles; USCA Cruiser & pro boat canoes. Men, women, mixed.

RACE SOLO: 7 miles; solo canoes. Men, women.

RACE KAYAK:
7 miles; solo kayaks. Men, women.

RACE SUP: 4 1/2 miles; stand-up paddleboard.

RECREATIONAL: 3 miles; 18’ maximum canoes (tandem or solo), kayaks or stand-up paddleboards. NOTE: This is a change from previous years. Starting in 2017 all watercraft paddling the 3 mile course are entered into a single recreational division.

Equipment

Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards as described above. Single-bladed paddles in canoes and stand-up paddleboards, double-bladed paddles in kayaks. U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets are required on all boats.

Hoigaard's brings a trailer of canoes and kayaks to Thomas Beach each week, available for anyone who wants to paddle the Paddle Derby. Availability is on a first-come-first-served basis.
